The Rijeka Carnival, one of the most spectacular cultural and entertainment events in the region, brings once again this year a plethora of programs and events that will attract visitors from all over Croatia, as well as from abroad. It officially begins on January 17th, at Anton Junction, and lasts until Ash Wednesday, March 5th, 2025. The organizers have ensured that this 42nd edition is one of the richest to date, with a special emphasis on preserving tradition, promoting local customs, and maintaining a humanitarian character.
Symbolic Handing Over of the Keys and Selection of the Queen
The key moment marking the beginning of the "fifth season" in Rijeka takes place on January 24th, when a new Queen of the Rijeka Carnival will be chosen in the Youth Hall. During the ceremony, the key to the City of Rijeka will be symbolically handed over to the masqueraders, thus beginning a period of joy, laughter, and entertainment that will last a full seven weeks.
This year's candidates for the prestigious title come from various parts of the region, and their role is not only representative but also promotional, as they symbolize the spirit of the carnival and the community's unity. All carnival event enthusiasts can also look forward to the "Selection of the Prince and Princess of the Rijeka Carnival" on February 7th at the Tower Center, where the youngest participants will also have the opportunity to shine.
Events for All Generations
The Rijeka Carnival proudly highlights the diversity of its programs, which include traditional parades, themed evenings, sports events, and workshops. Special attention is drawn to the Children's Carnival Parade on February 15th, in which as many as 6,000 children from 67 carnival groups will participate. Their creativity and effort are visible in every detail, from imaginative costumes to choreographies that delight the spectators.
The highlight of the events is undoubtedly the International Carnival Parade, which will take place on March 2nd. Participation of over 9,000 participants spread across nearly 100 groups is expected, of which 14 will be from abroad. The parade traditionally follows the route from Gata Karolina Rijeka through Korzo to Exportdrvo, bringing a spectacle of colors, music, and satire.
Humanitarian Spirit of the Carnival
One of the most important features of the Rijeka Carnival is its humanitarian character. The Jubilee 20th Humanitarian Gala Party, which will be held on March 1st at Export, will collect funds for the Oaza Association, an organization that provides support to the homeless and socially vulnerable individuals. Alongside this event, numerous other programs, such as masquerade jams, maneštra, and humanitarian parties, also aim to help those who need it most.
Gastronomic and Sports Activities
Food lovers will be able to enjoy various workshops and events dedicated to traditional Kvarner cuisine. The carnival's gastronomic offer includes a range of specialties, from maneštra to fritule, which will provide visitors with the true taste of local tradition.
Sports enthusiasts will be able to try their hand at the Carnival Snowboard Session on Platak or participate in the Carnival Run, a race that will take place on Molo Longo. These activities combine a love for sports with joy and the spirit of the carnival, offering visitors the opportunity to be part of a unique experience.
Impact on Tourism and Promotion of the Region
The Rijeka Carnival has a significant impact on the development of tourism in Rijeka and its surroundings, especially in the pre-season. According to the organizers, the number of overnight stays during this period is increasing year by year, and many accommodation capacities are already fully booked. The Sunday Times has included this event among the 500 events to visit, thereby further increasing its international recognition.
In addition to attracting tourists, the carnival plays a key role in preserving local customs and cultural heritage. Organizers and participants work together to ensure that this celebration becomes bigger and more significant each year, promoting Rijeka as a destination of culture, entertainment, and tradition.
Messages from Organizers and Sponsors
The Mayor of Rijeka, Marko Filipović, emphasized that the carnival is not just entertainment, but also a way for Rijeka to showcase its authenticity and openness. The Director of the Rijeka City Tourist Board, Petar Škarpa, highlighted that this year's program is the richest to date and thanked all sponsors and partners who made the organization possible.
