Anyone who knows me knows that I can never stay in one place for long. Maybe it's because of my restlessness, maybe it's due to an eternal search for something that could fill the void I feel, or maybe I just love exploring the unknown, feeling the thrill that comes with new experiences. But this time, the journey to the heart of Africa, to the Victoria Falls, was more than just exploring a new destination. It was a journey I had longed for, but also a journey I longed for myself – for my heart, for my soul.

Everyone asked me why Victoria Falls? Why not some exotic beach or a vibrant metropolis? The reason is simple, yet complicated. I grew up hearing stories about Victoria Falls, listening to their majesty, the untamed force of nature that cannot be compared to anything else. It was something that fascinated me, but also scared me. That immense power, that force of nature that defies everything – it was something I wanted to face, not just as a tourist, but as someone seeking inner strength, someone searching for a way to free themselves from fears and insecurities.

The journey to Victoria Falls was anything but simple. From the moment I decided to embark on this journey, I felt incredible excitement mixed with a dose of uncertainty. Africa had always been on my wish list, but I never had the opportunity to experience it in such an intimate way. This time, it was not just a tourist destination, but a place where I planned to find a part of myself that I felt was missing.

I started from Croatia, leaving behind familiar landscapes and a culture that was so close to me. Yet, within me, I carried an irresistible desire to explore the unknown. The first part of my journey was a long flight to the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare. As the plane wheels lifted off the ground, I felt my heart race. It was more than just excitement; it was the anticipation of something I could not even imagine. Africa awakened in me a sense of freedom, unpredictability, and adventure.

Arrival in Harare was my first encounter with the African continent. The air was warm, humid, and fragrant with exotic spices and unknown aromas. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I felt like I had entered a completely new world. The people were friendly, but also a bit distant, as if they were watching me cautiously while I observed them with admiration. The city was chaotic, noisy, and full of life – a complete contrast to the calm and organized life I was used to in Croatia. Yet, there was something about that hustle and bustle that drew me in, that made me feel alive.

After a short stay in Harare, I boarded a flight to Victoria Falls, a small town located on the border with Zambia. That flight was a special experience because it was the moment when I first realized how vast Africa truly is. The sky was endless, and beneath me stretched immense landscapes – from dense forests to arid plains, everything looked like it was drawn from a dream. I felt small in comparison to that grandeur, but at the same time, I felt part of something much larger.


 

As we approached Victoria Falls, my heart started beating faster. The airplane landed on a small runway surrounded by rainforest, and suddenly everything became real. I was no longer looking at pictures in books or on the internet – I was there, on the edge of something that would forever change my life. The drive from the airport to the town was short but long enough to take in the first impressions. The road was winding, surrounded by dense vegetation, and occasionally through the windows, I could see wild animals grazing peacefully in the distance. That sight took my breath away – it was my first encounter with the African wilderness, and it was magical.

I arrived in Victoria Falls, a small town that built its identity around its most famous attraction – Victoria Falls. The town was like an oasis in the wilderness, on one side surrounded by the mighty Zambezi River, and on the other side by lush rainforest. The people here lived simply but were proud of their land and its natural beauty. Every step in this town felt like discovering something new and unknown. The air was filled with moisture and the scent of the rainforest, and the roar of the falls could already be heard in the distance, like a constant, soothing hum.

My arrival in this town was filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, I felt immensely happy to finally be here, but on the other hand, there was anxiety about what awaited me. Victoria Falls was not just a physical destination – they were a symbol of something I needed in my life. That moment, when I first saw the signs leading to the falls, was the moment I realized that this journey would be something that would forever leave a mark on me.

Every step to my accommodation was marked by anticipation. The hotel I stayed at was located on the edge of the rainforest, with a view of the Zambezi River. When I first saw Victoria Falls, it was like stepping into a completely different world. The first thing that hit me was the smell. The moisture in the air carried the scent of fresh water, mixed with some primordial force of nature. It was the smell of something untamed, something so powerful that it felt like the earth itself was breathing and pulsing beneath my feet. The air was filled with tiny droplets of water that lightly splashed my face, cooling me and clearing my thoughts. That invisible mist acted like a purification, as if it was preparing me for what I was about to see.

Then I saw them. A huge, white curtain of water falling from a height that was hard to comprehend, with such force and speed that it seemed like time stood still. I stood on the edge of the abyss, watching the water flow into the depths, and my heart pounded like never before. I felt my knees slightly buckle, as if I was facing something that surpassed human understanding. As I stood there, in that moment, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. When I finally moved away from the breathtaking sight of Victoria Falls after that first glimpse, I set out on the trail that led into the depths of the rainforest. The feeling of anticipation mixed with awe because I knew I was about to enter a world that was both mysterious and unpredictable. The rainforest surrounding Victoria Falls is not just a frame for that magnificent view – it is its own ecosystem, pulsating with life, hiding thousands of secrets and beauties.

The path I walked on was narrow, bordered by dense greenery that stretched above me, creating a natural canopy. The air was heavy with moisture, and the scent of the earth, mixed with notes of flowers and grass, filled my senses. Every step echoed in the silence, with only occasional forest sounds heard in the distance – sounds made by hidden fauna, reminding me that I was not alone.

As I moved deeper into the rainforest, details began to reveal themselves around me that I would not have noticed at first glance. Colorful birds fluttered through the air, leaving behind traces of colors that seemed unreal. It was as if I had entered an unknown dimension, where every plant, every animal, had its place and purpose. The plants were so diverse that I often stopped, fascinated by the different shapes and textures of their leaves and flowers. Every new step revealed a new species, a new shade of green, a new harmony of nature.

In that clearing, wildflowers grew in abundance, a colorful carpet of natural hues that took my breath away. The forest was not just a place I was passing through – it was alive, breathing around me, and I felt it enveloping me in its arms, inviting me to become a part of it. Along the way, I encountered small streams that cut through the forest, their water clear and cold, like a mirror reflecting the entire beauty of that hidden world. Occasionally, I would feel a light breeze, bringing the scent of wild orchids and fresh grass, reminding me of the simple pleasures of life.

As I walked further, I realized how rich this forest was with life. Tiny insects crossed the paths, each of them in search of food or shelter. Their wings, often transparent and delicate, glistened in the light, creating the illusion of tiny crystals in motion. It seemed as if every corner of the forest was filled with life, every movement was a reminder of the ongoing cycle of life and death that was taking place here, far from the eyes of the world.

I felt how this forest was slowly changing me, how its beauty was filling me with a peace I had never experienced before. Every new step brought a new discovery, a new wonder that awakened my imagination and made me think about the beauty of the world that often remains hidden to those who do not know where to look. Here, in the heart of this rainforest, I felt small, but at the same time incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to be a part of this.

I continued walking, deeper and deeper into the forest, aware that every step was leading to something new, something unexplored. This part of the journey was more than just exploration – it was an encounter with something primordial, something that had always existed and would always exist, regardless of all the changes happening in the world. The rainforest was eternal, and I was just a passerby in its endless cycle.

I felt completely immersed in this world, completely surrendered to the beauty and wonder of the nature that surrounded me. Every new sight, every new encounter with flora and fauna, was like a piece of a puzzle that was slowly coming together, revealing to me the deeper meaning of my journey. However, I knew that the true experience of this place would not be complete without meeting the people who live here, those who are connected to this land in a way that I was just beginning to understand. My encounter with the local community was one of the most profound and inspiring moments of this journey.

The first encounter happened in a small village near Victoria Falls. As I approached, I could smell the smoke from the fires where women were preparing meals for their families. Children were playing in the dust, their joyful laughter echoing through the air, while the elders sat in the shade of trees, talking about things that were unknown to me, but I felt were part of something important. It was a village filled with a simple, yet fulfilling life.

One of the first people I met was an older woman named Nala. Her smile was warm and soothing, as if she already knew me. I sat with her under a large tree, while children gathered curiously around us. Nala began to tell me about her life, the challenges she faced, but also the joys she found in everyday things. Her life was hard, but she did not seek pity. Instead, she spoke with pride about her family, about the land that provided everything she ever needed. In her eyes, I saw a strength that comes from accepting life as it is, without unnecessary expectations or desires.

After we talked, Nala invited me to taste their food. The meal she had prepared was simple, but delicious – a combination of corn, vegetables, and meat. As I ate, I felt a connection with these people, as if we were all part of the same experience, the same life. Nala told me stories about their customs, about how generations live together here, sharing everything, from food to joy and sorrow. Her words were a reminder of how important community is, how the connection with each other makes us stronger and more resilient to everything that life brings.

The next encounter was with a young man named Tawanda. He was a young man full of energy and dreams, but also someone who deeply respected the tradition of his ancestors. Tawanda showed me how traditional wooden souvenirs are made, carefully shaping each piece as if it were a work that would last forever. As he worked, he told me about his life, about his love for art, but also about the struggle to preserve culture in a rapidly changing world. His stories were filled with hope, but also determination not to forget where he came from, to preserve the heritage of his ancestors for future generations.

I was particularly touched by the story of his grandfather, an elder known for his wise words and advice. His grandfather always said that the most important thing in life is to be connected with one's roots, that only then can we grow and progress. Tawanda said that his grandfather died with a smile on his face, knowing that he had left a mark in the lives of those he loved. Those words remained etched in my heart, reminding me of how important it is to preserve and respect the past, even as we look to the future.

The last encounter that remained in my memory was with a young girl named Amina. She was quiet, somewhat reserved, but with eyes that shone with curiosity. Amina told me about her dreams, her desire to go to the city and study, but also about her love for nature and the land where she grew up. Her life was simple, but filled with love for her family and community. As she spoke, I felt how deep and sincere that love was, how important it is to have something worth fighting for, something that drives and fulfills us.

Amina took me on a walk through the fields that her family had cultivated for generations. We walked through tall grass, as the sun set behind the horizon, casting golden shadows on the ground. As we walked, she told me about her dreams, her desire to do something great, but also about her fear of forgetting who she is and where she comes from. In that moment, I realized how similar her fears were to mine, how all of us, no matter where we live, share the same worries and hopes.

These encounters deeply touched me. I met people who, despite all the challenges, retained their strength, pride, and simplicity of life. Their stories were like a mirror in which I saw my own fears, hopes, and dreams. I felt inspired by their courage, their ability to find joy in small things and not give up despite all difficulties.

These people taught me an important lesson – that strength does not come from material things, but from the connection with the people around us, from the love for the land and the culture that shapes us. Their stories became a part of me, reminding me that, no matter where I go or what I do, I always carry with me a part of all those I met on my journey.

After spending time in close contact with nature and the local community, it was time to explore another important aspect of the culture of this area – food. Enjoying the local cuisine was not just a matter of satisfying hunger, but an opportunity to delve deeper into the daily life of the people who live here. Food has always been more than just a meal; it is an expression of identity, history, and values of a nation, and Zimbabwe was no exception.

The first encounter with local flavors happened in the village where I stayed. Here, I was invited to participate in the preparation of a traditional dish. The women were already gathered around an open fire, and the smells that filled the air already tickled my nose. I watched as they skillfully and lovingly mixed simple ingredients – corn, vegetables, meat – creating something that was more than the sum of its parts. Each ingredient had its story, its place in a culture that was passed down through generations.

When we finally sat down to eat, the dish the women had prepared was incredible. It was sadza, a staple in Zimbabwe, similar to polenta but with a finer, softer texture. Alongside the sadza, they served a vegetable and meat stew that was rich and full of flavor. Its simplicity was deceiving because each spoonful carried layers of taste, the result of careful cooking and combining of ingredients. The flavors were subtle but full, and I could feel how each component of the dish stood out, without overshadowing the other.

What particularly surprised me was the presence of spices. They were not intense, but they were present in every bite, giving the dish a special character. I felt a gentle warmth from the chili, mixed with aromas that were unfamiliar to me but perfectly complemented the taste of the meat and vegetables. It was an experience that went beyond an ordinary meal – I felt a connection with the people who had been preparing this food for generations, as if I had become a part of their tradition.

After this first meal, I decided to explore the local cuisine further. One of the best ways to do this was to visit the market in Victoria Falls, where local vendors sold their products. The market was full of colors and smells – fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, dried meat, and fish, all of it making this space alive and pulsating. Every stall had its story, and I felt like a child in a candy store, not knowing what to try first.


 

One of the vendors offered me to try mopane worms, a delicacy in these parts. At first, I was skeptical, but curiosity prevailed. Mopane worms were dried and fried, crispy on the outside, but soft and meaty inside. The taste was unexpectedly pleasant – nutty, slightly earthy, with a mild saltiness. This was one of those moments when I realized how important it is to open up to new experiences, how courage can bring unexpected pleasures.

Besides mopane worms, I also tried different types of fruits I had never seen before. Baobab fruit was particularly interesting – hard on the outside, with an interior that resembled powder, with a tangy taste. I also tasted matooke, a type of green bananas that were cooked until soft and sweet, perfectly complementing the main dish of meat. Every new ingredient I tried opened a door to a different world, a world where food was more than just sustenance; it was culture, history, and identity.

One of the most significant moments of my culinary journey in Zimbabwe was participating in a traditional family meal. We dined outdoors, under the starry sky, and the food was simple but prepared with a lot of love. We were served nyama choma, grilled meat cooked over an open fire, accompanied by a side of vegetables and legumes. The meat was perfectly cooked, juicy and full of flavor, and the vegetables added a freshness that perfectly complemented the dish.

During the meal, we talked about everything – life, the land, the challenges they face, but also the joys they find in everyday things. The food was the means that connected us, but the conversations were what made the meal special. I felt how important it is to share a meal with others, how food can be a means of connection, of building community and understanding.

This culinary part of my journey was an experience that enriched everything I had experienced so far. Through food, I understood Zimbabwe on a deeper level, realized how important culture and tradition are in the daily lives of these people. The flavors I experienced remained etched in my memory, reminding me of the warmth and hospitality of the people I met, of the connection with nature and the land that provides everything they need. Food became more than just a meal – it became a symbol of community, history, and love for life.

Adrenaline Activities: Viewing Victoria Falls from Another Perspective

After spending days immersing myself in the culture and natural beauty of Zimbabwe, I felt the need for something that would further awaken my spirit, something that would challenge me in a completely different way. Victoria Falls, with all their majesty, provided just that opportunity – the opportunity to face my fears and feel the adrenaline that would fill me with new strength. It was time to experience them from a completely new perspective, a perspective that required courage and a willingness to take risks.

The first activity that attracted me was bungee jumping from the bridge that spans the Zambezi River. That bridge, located between Zimbabwe and Zambia, was not just an architectural marvel but also a challenge for all those who wanted to test their limits. As I stood on the bridge, looking down at the mighty river flowing below, I felt my heart start to race. The view of the falls from this height was stunning, but I knew that the jump would provide a completely new dimension to this experience.

The instructors prepared me, ensuring that all the safety harnesses were securely fastened. But even though the technical aspects were under control, nothing could have prepared me for the feeling that followed. As I stood on the edge, looking into the abyss below, I had to face my fear. That moment before the jump was the hardest – that moment when I had to decide whether to trust myself and the world around me. The feeling of emptiness, adrenaline, and fear mixed within me as I took deep breaths, preparing to take a step into the unknown.

The second of the jump was incredible. I felt gravity pulling me down, the air rushing past me as I approached the river. In that moment, all my thoughts, all worries, all fears, disappeared. There was only that raw, pure emotion – freedom. The view of Victoria Falls from this perspective was like nothing I had ever experienced. The water thundering down into the depths seemed even more powerful, even more magnificent. As I hung at the end of the rope, I felt that moment filling me with a strength I had never experienced before.

After bungee jumping, it was time for another challenge – zip-lining across the Zambezi River canyon. This activity was less intense but no less exciting. As I was high above the river, connected only by a thin rope and a wheel sliding along the wire, I felt the adrenaline surge through me again. But this time, that feeling was mixed with something else – a sense of wonder and peace. As I glided over the canyon, I could calmly observe the surrounding landscape, soaking in the beauty of the nature that surrounded me.

The view of Victoria Falls from this perspective was completely different. They were distant, but no less powerful. It seemed as if they were the ones controlling the entire landscape, as if these falls were the source of all the power pulsing through this land. I felt that power filling me again, a feeling of connection with nature, with something greater than myself. That feeling of freedom, the feeling of flying above the earth, above all my worries and problems, was indescribable.

These adrenaline activities were much more than just thrills. They were moments in which I faced my deepest fears, moments in which I had to trust myself, my decisions, and the world around me. Through those moments, I felt myself growing stronger, finding a strength within me that I didn't even know existed. Victoria Falls are not just a natural wonder – they are a place where you can find parts of yourself that you may have forgotten or lost.

The feeling of adrenaline was incomparable, but what remained after those moments was even more important – a sense of achievement, a sense of pride, and a new perspective on life. As I stood on solid ground again, watching Victoria Falls once more, I knew that this experience had changed me. Every jump, every flight, every moment of fear and joy was part of a process that led me to the realization of how important it is to sometimes let go, face the unknown, and allow yourself to feel life in its full force.

These activities, no matter how intense, were not just physical challenges. They were mental and emotional adventures that helped me rediscover my own limits, connect with nature on a deeper level, and realize how important it is to trust yourself and your instincts. Victoria Falls, with all their force and beauty, provided me with the opportunity to face my fears and emerge from those encounters stronger, braver, and more prepared for whatever life may bring.

As my stay in Zimbabwe drew to a close, I felt myself slowly being overwhelmed by emotions I had neither expected nor planned. This journey was more than just exploring a new place, more than an adventure, and more than facing the unknown. It was a journey within myself, a journey that opened doors to my deepest emotions and allowed me to find parts of myself that I may have long neglected.

Every day spent here was an opportunity for reflection and introspection. The first encounter with Victoria Falls was the moment when I first faced something so powerful and magnificent that I felt my own smallness compared to that natural force. Adrenaline activities, such as bungee jumping and zip-lining, were a test of my limits, both physical and emotional. To jump into the void, literally and figuratively, required courage, but also trust – trust in myself and the world around me. In those moments, as I hung over the abyss or flew over the river, I felt myself letting go of fears that may have held me back for a long time. Every jump, every flight was a step towards freedom, towards the feeling that I can overcome any obstacle, no matter how great. These activities were symbolic acts of liberation, moments in which I felt how important it is to take risks, face the unknown, and trust that everything will be okay.

One of the most important insights I gained during this journey was how important it is to find peace within oneself. I return home with the feeling that I have found a part of myself that has long been lost, a part of myself that will guide me through all future challenges with renewed strength and faith in life.
